Melamine in Cadbury

Preliminary tests have found the chemical melamine in Cadbury's Chinese-made chocolates, the company says.

At least 50,000 Chinese babies have been sickened and four killed by milk tainted with the industrial chemical.

Cadbury had earlier recalled 11 chocolate types from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia because of fears of contamination.

It remains unclear how much melamine was in the recalled products, a Cadbury spokesman told the BBC.

"It's early days, as these are preliminary findings from the tests," the spokesman said.

He emphasised that the only goods affected were those made in the company's Beijing factory, and not those produced in the UK or elsewhere.

China's reputation for food safety has nosedived since the revelations last month that milk products poisoned by melamine were responsible for causing renal problems in babies who drank the milk formula.

Beware of Energy Drinks!

Have you wondered how many people consume energy drinks on a daily basis, or even more often? Or what happens if you combine them with alcohol? Well, we must tell you there isn’t good news; and warn you to be careful.

At first, these high-caffeine drinks were consumed by all gaming elite to ensure their speed is high and reflexes are sharp in extended play, because the drinks were promoted as performance enhancers. However, they soon gained popularity so that an incredible number of people, not only gamers, consume them. It seems that United States citizens alone spent approximately 5.4 billion U.S. dollars on energy drinks in 2006, a figure growing about 47 percent per year, a report said.

According to the findings of a new study published in the Sept. 20 issue of the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, the super-caffeinated energy drinks can trigger caffeine intoxication. "The caffeine content of energy drinks varies over a 10-fold range, with some containing the equivalent of 14 cans of Coca-Cola, yet the caffeine amounts are unlabeled and few include warnings about potential health risks of caffeine intoxication," said one of the authors of the study, Roland Griffiths of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

Caffeine intoxication is clinically considered a syndrome. It is currently defined by a number of symptoms and clinical features that surface in response to recent excessive consumption of caffeine. Common features of caffeine intoxication include excitement, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, restlessness, tremors, insomnia, rambling flow of thought and speech or periods of inexhaustibility. In rare cases, caffeine intoxication can lead to death.

One death apparently linked to the intake of a popular energy drink, Red Bull, made the headlines in 2000, when Irish athlete Ross Cooney, 18, died of sudden adult death syndrome hours after drinking four cans of the drink. Following the occurrence, France prohibited the energy drink, but it removed the ban only days after. However, in countries such as Norway, Uruguay and Denmark, it remains banned.

Since a lot of energy drinks are marketed as "dietary supplements" that increase energy and physical performance, the limit the FDA requires on the caffeine amount found in energy drinks isn’t valid. Caffeinated energy drinks are a growing concern because they guarantee super alertness. Still, they carry with 10 times or even more the caffeine content of soft drinks.

The team of researchers from Johns Hopkins University who carried out the study said that manufacturers should note on caffeinated energy drinks’ labels the caffeine doses the products carry, and to caution on presumptive risks they pose to consumers.

The caffeine content of energy drinks can vary from can to can, from 50 milligrams to more than 500 milligrams per serving, whereas a normal 12-ounce cola drink has approximately 35 mg of caffeine per serving and a 6-ounce cup of brewed coffee has 80 to 150 milligrams of the stimulant drug per serving.

On the word of one drink-company manufacturer, the energy drinks can be a harmless substitute to drug abuse for youngsters. “We say, ‘Do the drink, not the drug,''' stated Raymond Herrera, Partner and world wide marketing director of Redux Beverages. “You do the drug you are dumb. If you do the drink you are cool.''

The Johns Hopkins researchers also said that caffeinated drinks can cause abuse of prescription stimulant drugs like Ritalin (Credit: eFluxMedia)

New Nintendo DS = Camera + Music Playback

Japanese business news outlet Nikkei Net is reporting that Nintendo will release a successor to the DS Lite by the end of this calendar year. Highlights of the updated feature set include improved wireless functionality (probably for extra-curricular use--not necessary for gaming), an on-board camera, and music playback.

The report goes on to suggest that the internal camera could be used by certain titles, with pictures taken with it somehow incorporated into gameplay. While there are no specifics on pricing, Nikkei Net says the new handheld should go for less than 20,000 yen (approximately $189).

Like with the DS Lite, the new DS will see a Japanese-only release to start, with a worldwide release soon after. We'll have more information on the new handheld as it develops.

Featuring Robots

ASIMO (アシモ, ashimo?) is a humanoid robot created by Honda Motor Company. Standing at 130 centimeters (4 feet 3 inches) and weighing 54 kilograms (119 pounds). The robot resembles a small astronaut wearing a backpack and can walk or run on two feet at speeds up to 6 km/h (4.3 mph).

ASIMO was created at Honda's Research & Development Wako Fundamental Technical Research Center in Japan. It is the current model in a line of eleven that began in 1986 with E0.

Three Law of Robotics
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

High School Musical 3 Trailer

This one is my favorite movies of all time!

High School Musical 3: Senior Year will be the third installment in Disney's High School Musical franchise. It is scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States on October 24. Kenny Ortega returns as director and choreographer, as do all six primary actors.

Now high school seniors, Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez are facing the prospect of being separated from each other as they go off in different directions when graduating from East High. Joined by the rest of their Wildcat friends, including Sharpay Evans, Ryan Evans, Chad Danforth, and Taylor McKessie they stage an elaborate spring musical reflecting their experiences, hopes and fears about the future.

The Space Hotel

Do you love to travel anywhere? If yes, here is the best trip for you! The "Galactic Suite"!

The first hotel planned in space, expects to open for business in 2012 and would allow guests to travel around the world in 80 minutes.

Its Barcelona-based architects say the space hotel will be the most expensive in the galaxy, costing $4 million for a three-day stay.

During that time, guests would see the sun rise 15 times a day and use Velcro suits to crawl around their pod rooms by sticking themselves to the walls like Spiderman.

Company director Xavier Claramunt says the three-bedroom boutique hotel's joined-up pod structure, which makes it look like a model of molecules, was dictated by the fact that each pod room had to fit inside a rocket to be taken into space.

"It's the bathrooms in zero gravity that are the biggest challenge," says Claramunt. "How to accommodate the more intimate activities of the guests is not easy."

But they may have solved the issue of how to take a shower in weightlessness -- the guests will enter a spa room in which bubbles of water will float around.

When guests are not admiring the view from their portholes they will take part in scientific experiments on space travel.

That Obama sex tape e-mail you might have received? Don't open it.

Hey! My fellow Batangueños and the people of the World, be careful with your emails! Why?

The e-mail, titled "Barack Obama sex story with girls," seems to come from an address called "obamasex@obama.com," reports the Internet security company Websense.

The e-mail reads in part:

"Sensation!!! United States Senator for Illinois Barack Obama in 2007 was travel to Ukraine and have sex action with many ukrainian girls! You may view this private porno in a flash video. Download and view now."

In case the Borat-like English and the references to the Ukraine haven't tipped you off, the attachment is full of PC viruses from Eastern Europe.

While you do get some generic porn video clips, none of which feature Barack Obama, you also get software that steals all your personal data and sends it to a Web site in Finland.

It's not the first time Obama's sex life has been linked to malware.

According to Wired magazine, an e-mail entitled "Scandal rocks Obama as lurid sex video leaked" made the rounds in June. That one led you to porn Web sites that asked you to install "viewers" on your PC.

T-shirts Enters the New Technology

Personal Embedded Equalizer

At ThinkGeek they constantly amazed at the never-ending evolution of new technology. They told me that it is their job. Take the lowly T-Shirt for example: In caveman times you had animal pelts... the Medieval era saw rise to the stylish burlap sack... next came lovely soft cotton and then synthetic polyester. Finally the modern space age delivers a fully functioning graphic equalizer in a handy t-shirt format. Party like it's 2999 with the glowing display on the T-Qualizer that dynamically changes with any ambient sound or music. This has to be the coolest wearable tech I've seen since the George Foreman backpack grill.

8-Bit Dynamic Life Shirt

Staying healthy is the key to keeping yourself alive. Video game characters know this all too well. When your red heart gauge reaches zero... you die. For non-bitmap humans like you this is more of a challenge. But luckily after extensive study at ThinkGeek labs we've determined that people feel best when they are in close proximity to something that they adore. Don't understand? Well luckily for you we've created this amazing 8-Bit Dynamic Life Shirt to illustrate.

Tiny is the new Big

The Batangueños are very familiar with Remote Controlled Helicopters. There are advertisements in the radio selling this kind of toy to everyone(Windsor Computers). But come to think of this one, the smallest R/C Helicopter!

The ravenous lust for tinier and tinier flying R/C toys has been temporarily satiated by these minuscule MX-1 copters from Silverlit. We thought we had seen small R/C copters until we were flabbergasted by a helicopter so small it actually fits inside its own remote. The MX-1 is a sharp looking little copter and it has a redesigned remote with smooth slider like controls. Dock the copter in the clear bay at the bottom and charge it up at the same time. Take to the air with confidence knowing that you're piloting the smallest manmade flying device commercially available.

Touch-screen Phone by Nokia

We, Batangueños are very much aware of those "fake" NOKIA(?) phones that can be bought on SM(Sa Muslim). Those are classified as "China Phones", and usually they are created using Touch-screen Technology with a "dual SIM" function. And take note, they are really cheap in price( same with its quality, CHEAP.)

But the real news is that, Nokia is preparing to enter the touch-screen cell phone market next week, with the debut of its first finger-sensitive phone, according to a Reuters report.

The European handset maker is planning to take the wraps off its touch-screen phone, code-named "Tube," during an event Thursday in London for analysts and the media, according to Reuters, which cites two unnamed sources.

The Tube will join a field that has been getting crowded since Apple debuted its popular iPhone a little over a year ago. Since then, competitors such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have come on the scene with their own touch-screen phones. Earlier this week, T-Mobile unveiled its G1, a touch-screen device that is the first to run Google's Android software.

Nokia noted in July that it planned to enter the touch-screen market and was initially aiming for the low end of the market.(Credit: Reuters)

Asus G50V: A Gaming Laptop

A gamer of independent means can drop several grand on a fully loaded Alienware Area-51 m15x, but what about the rest of us?

Asus seems to have budget-minded gamers in mind with its $1,699 G50V. The 15.4-inch laptop has many of the same features as the Alienware (and then some), but economizes on components, stocking the LED-decorated case with a slightly lower-end processor and GPU. However, its frame rates were not all that far behind the Alienware's--which is to say, they were entirely playable. That's a sacrifice we're willing to make in order to save $1,500.

It's true that the 17-inch Gateway P-7811FX is still our top pick for budget gaming, but the Asus G50V comes in a close second. And its smaller form factor makes it preferable for those who want a more mobile gaming rig.

So you may order now!

The First Google Phone

My fellow Batangueños!

Do you know that last Tuesday(Sept 23) in New York, T-Mobile USA unveils the first smartphone to use Google's mobile operating system, Android?

Yes, it is true! And in this picture, HTC's chief executive, Peter Chou, is joined by Andy Rubin, Google's senior executive director of mobile platforms, and Christopher Schläffer, T-Mobile group product and innovation officer, on stage to show off the phone, which comes in three colors.

Wow! What a phone?!

Text Messaging

Facts - The Philippines is known as the ‘text capital of the world’. ‘Presently each mobile phone user in the Philippines is sending out at least 10 text messages a day compared to about 3 text messages per user in the United Kingdom (Pertierra 2005a; cf. Ling 2004). About one Filipino in two is a subscriber to a mobile phone service.

At the end of 2007 four of the top mobile phone service providers in the country stated there were 42.78 million mobile phone subscribers in the Philippines

One of the main reasons text messages became so popular in the Philippines is the affordability. In addition, text messaging was generally more reliable compared to a fixed phone line or relying on poor mobile phone coverage that included drop-outs.

As a matter of fact, even here in Batangas, it is very uncommon for a person to have no cellphones. As I walk around the streets, I can see people texting...even a 7 year old kid.

How about you? How does this technology affect your everyday life?

Oracle, Already a Hardware Company?

Computers - Oracle CEO Larry Ellison on Wednesday unveiled its first ever hardware product--a storage server with embedded software designed to work with the company's databases and be used in a grid. The Exadata programmable storage server aims to put database intelligence next to each drive.

The hardware roll-out, which was cooked up in a partnership with Hewlett-Packard, is aimed at the emerging problem of moving data from hard drives to database servers. The storage server took three years of development with HP and has been tested for about a year with key customers such as Google.

Ellison, speaking at Oracle's OpenWorld conference, said large databases are creating a fundamental problem: disk storage systems can't cope with data that has to be moved off of drives to database servers. He called it a "data bandwidth problem."

As data gets larger the slowdowns become more unbearable, at one terabyte you will notice data bandwidth slippage. At 10 terabytes, storage systems crawl. "At one terabyte the problem rears its ugly head and it gets worse every year," said Ellison.

Ellison outlined query processing and how Oracle's embedded software will handle query processing and other functions more efficiently. Oracle is hoping to sell its storage hardware as part of a grid. Drives will be searched in parallel also.

With the move, Oracle is copying Apple's model to a degree. Ellison is arguing that combined hardware and software efforts can be more effective. Instead of the consumer market, where Apple's secret sauce is tightly integrated in hardware and software for Macs and iPods, Oracle is coupling its database software with custom hardware to revamp data centers.

The Exadata storage server will be immediately available on Linux running on Intel, but Ellison noted other flavors for various platforms "are on the way." Oracle's move could be disruptive in the storage market and with players like EMC and IBM, since it can offer a joint-software hardware sale and leverage its HP's partnership. HP and Oracle are also rolling out an "Oracle database machine," designed for customers that don't want to configure the systems. The initial machine has 168 terabytes of disk data and 64 Intel cores.

A Fact about MILK.

Batangas City - Troughout the world the number of mothers who breastfeed their babies has been declining, alarming health authorities.

In China, the price is high as shown by the thousands of infants who have been hospitalized after ingesting milk formula tainted with the industrial chemical melamine.

Normally used in plastics, melamine is a toxic chemical that can cause vomiting, kidney stones, and lead to kidney failures. Four Chinese infants have died after drinking contaminated milk.

Although there has been no confirmed cases of tainted milk being exported to other countries, Singapore and Hong Kong have reported similar problems, and the World Health Organization has advised other nations to take precautions.

But perhaps there is one very good lesson that can be picked up from the contaminated milk scandal. It is the need to promote breastfeeding in the country.

So, how are you, our fellow batanguenos? Still afraid of milk?

The FM Station Fever!

Radio Stations - It is a fact that we Batangueños are very much fond on listening to our own radio at home or on our portable devices. Starting from our mother and father who listens to AM stations which tackles mostly about news and current events up to our youngest brothers and sisters who enjoys singing and even dancing with the songs and rhythms of FM stations.

From those facts, we can conclude that radio has become a part of our life. In accordance with being a part of our life, we Batangueños have our own FM Stations located here in Batangas City. It is well known that (2) two of them are the biggest and the most listened to, namely 104.7 Bay Radio and 99.1 Spirit FM.

At this time, these 2 FM Stations are dominating our homes in terms of music. Both of them are acquiring that they are the No. 1, the Most Listened To, and whatever praise they could give to themselves. But it doesn't really affect my views about them. What is important to me is that they give entertainment to those to look for it.

How about you? Do you have any comments on which is the better FM Station?

Mobile Games As Thesis

AMA Computer College - We have a news about the current thesis of AMA that their 4th years students are currently busy of creating a game for mobile phones. The game is created using JAVA, specifically J2ME. This sounds great! Why?! You know, JAVA language is one of the best programming language in our times, so making something nice out of it is very challenging! From that fact, I'm just thinking of what challenges and hardships are being experience by those students...

But in fact, after all of this is done, you can take your rest for a while.(That's true! Hehehe.)Also, according to our informant, their thesis defense will be on October 4, 2008. Whew!

So, all I have to say is to do your best and study well. Hope to make it guys!

Make Love Not War Award

UNIVERSITY OF BATANGAS - That said award is given to the most controversial groups in UB, the ADVO (student publication) and the SG (student government). It is said that, this two groups are always making scandalous gossip and backstabbing words against each other on the past years.

But now, after a long time of conflicts, it seems to be that the two groups are now in peace. That is the reason why the ADVO MAG (Volume 6, Issue 1) granted the "Make Love Not War Award" to the SG and to themselves as a sign of ceasefire.

I'm just thinking how will it be in the coming years? Will they continue to make love & peace? Or suddenly conflicts will appear again?

We are just hoping everything will be fine...

Paper Bag Instead of Plastic Bag

Batangas City - Our city has now a new ordinance of using paper bag instead of plastic bag. According to them, this is a solution in the increasing pollution not only here in our city but in the world. As we may see, plastic bags are scattered everywhere, street, sidewalk and even on our Calumpang River.

Since paper is a biodegradable material, it will not cause pollution and garbage is lessen. But the problem is, the making of paper bags requires more water, another is human and mechanical efforts and costs are very high, not forgetting the physical cost to loggers and those who work around the numerous chemicals

This project is not new at all. We already know that other countries out there are using paper bags for a long period of time. Now, it will be implemented here, so what should be our view about it?
